Portland Pro Wrestling Battles Hunger

November 2nd, 2009

Portland WrestlingThis is a Portland Pro Wrestling event that I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to!

The 2 Portland promotions, DOA Pro Wrestling and NWWA Pro Wrestling are tag-teaming to beat Oregon hunger and win one for needy families all around the state. Beginning Saturday, November 21, they will be putting together a 73-hour wrestling specatular, featuring not only grapplers from both promotions, but stars from across the country coming in.  All of this to benefit the Oregon Food Bank!

In true Rose City spirit, both contending promotions set aside their differences for 3 days and work their tails off to put on a hell of a show for the fans in the northwest and give back in spades to the community. Who said wrestlers don’t have a soft spot?

$5 or 2 cans of food will get you in the door. That is one awesome event and something that you don’t want to miss!

This bash-fest goes straight through until Tueday evening, non-stop and I’ll be there to cover the whole bloody thing (pun intended)!

For all the information, head over to DOA Pro Wrestling web site.

John Cleese To Make Portland Appearance

October 20th, 2009

john_cheeseI just received word from John Cleese’s marketing people that the Monty Python alumni will indeed be invading Portland on Monday, November 2nd at 8pm.

I remember discovering the zany comedy of the Python’s when I was a teen and I loved it. Mind you, it’s not your upper-brow type of humor and that is exactly why it suited me so well. I like the obscure stuff…the slapstick…the weird.

Honestly, if you told me a very well thought out story joke that was all the recent rage, I may or may not laugh.I just can’t guarantee you anything. But, if you happened to pass wind while telling me that joke, I’d break up laughing. Sorry, folks…it’s all in the delivery….or something of the sort.

Anyway, John Cleese has that wacky sense of humor that will keep an audience in stitches. He is the epitome of a master story teller as well as a crafted comedian and actor. Can you get a better package?

John will be at the Newmark Theatre, 1111 S.W. Broadway, discussing his career in the world of comedy, as well as his most pressing medical problems, his inability to find a suitable female companion, his mistrust of folk-dancing, and his latest plan for world peace. At the same time, his famous BBC series, Fawlty Towers, is being released as a remastered DVD set to a whole new generation. Right up there with Monty Python, Fawlty Towers highlighted the comedic talent of John Cleese as well as anything could.

This Portland event is right around the corner, so hurry over to Ticketmaster and grab your tickets before they’re all gone. This will definitely be a night you won’t forget! Hope to see you there.

Wade Vs Food – The Rematch

September 29th, 2009

MancakesIt went down on the 26th of September….the long-awaited rematch between Wade Pack and the Stepping Stone Cafe’s world famous Mancakes. Wade Vs Mancakes, Round 2.

Wade had his game face on that day, ready to conquer the extra large pancakes, his eye on the prize of a Polaroid of himself  on their Wall of Fame.

A few moths ago, Pack stepped into the NW Portland cafe with breakfast on his mind, not a challenge. He remembered seeing Adam Richman of the Travel Channel’s “Man Vs Food” fame talking about these amazing creations and, at that point, decided to step up to the plate, quite literally. Unfortunately, the fluffy cakes defeated him that day.

The 26th was the rematch. View Part 1 and 2 of the video below to see what happens:

Thar Be Portland Pirates in the Guinness World Records

September 21st, 2009

2009 Portland Pirate FestivalAt the 2009 Portland Pirate Festival, a mass of Pirates invade Cathedral Park under the St Johns Bridge with the intent of putting Portland in the Guinness Book of World Records.

As of yesterday, the title of “Most Pirates in One Place” goes to the city of Portland as 1,651 locals turned out to break the previous record of 1,469 set by Brixham, England in May of this year.

The scene was nothing short of amazing. The high seas has never seen the likes of cut-throat pirates as the city of Portland saw this last weekend. Eye patches, swords, and impressive costumes, both male and female (I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many push-up bras!), all came out September 19th and 20th to enjoy live music, tasty foods of all sorts and games galore.

It was quite the event and something I will never forget. Read my complete write up on the 2009 Portland Pirate Festival World Record at The Portlander.com

Exceptional Musicians Featured at Portland Japanese Garden Moonviewing Event

September 15th, 2009

Lantern at the Portland Japanese GardenThis year’s Moonviewing evenings at the Portland Japanese Garden will be further enhanced by performances from three top musicians. Accomplished koto (zither) player Mitsuki Dazai will be featured all three evenings of Moonviewing at the Garden, together with two highly respected shakuhachi (bamboo flute) players, Larry Tyrrell (on Oct. 2 and 3), and Hanz Araki (Oct. 4).

Moonviewing, or O-Tsukimi, is a traditional Japanese festival which honors the full moon in autumn. Guests enjoy a quiet evening in the Garden, observe a candle-lit tea ceremony in the Kashin Tei Tea House, listen to exquisite Japanese music, and snack delicious little seasonally appropriate treats catered by Chef Naoko to complement their sake or tea.

Mitsuki Dazai is a graduate of Japan’s renowned Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, Japan, where she majored in vocal performance in the Western Classical tradition. During the course of her studies, she felt drawn to the non-western traditions of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Interest in these areas eventually led Mitsuki on a circuitous route to a discovery of traditional Japanese music and she began intense studies in traditional koto music at the Ikuta School of Koto. She is a graduate of the prestigious Sawai Koto Conservatory in Tokyo, where she was honored as a certified koto instructor. Mitsuki’s musical background is both diverse and extensive as a performer and innovator, arranging and composing koto music in different styles. Not limiting herself to music traditionally associated with the koto, her performances often incorporate western, pop, and improvisational elements and arrangements, challenging the many voices of the koto and allowing her to relate the koto’s appeal to a variety of audiences. She has performed solo and with ensembles throughout Japan, and in Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland and Eugene.

Larry Tyrrell is a composer and accomplished player of the shakuhachi. He began his studies with Masayuki Koga and later studied with Kohachiro Miyata and Katsuya Yokoyama. He was composer-in-residence in 1992 and 1993 with the Okayama Hogaku Ensemble. In 1994, he co-founded Moonbridge, an independent CD label. He produced “Floating Clouds” and “Zen Reveries.”

Seattle-born musician Hanzaburo Araki is the world’s only sixth generation shakuhachi player, following in the footsteps of his father, Kinko Ryu Grand Master Kodo Araki V. With no prior musical training, Hanz took up the shakuhachi, the traditional bamboo “Zen flute,” at age 17. Under his father’s tutelage, four months later he made his concert debut in Shimonoseki, Japan. Returning to Seattle in 1991, he has performed in the Seattle Folklife Festival every year from 1998 to the present, as well as for the Gates Estate, Seattle Art Museum, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. In 2009, he was named Araki Kodo VI by his father in a small ceremony in Tokyo.

Moonviewing will be held on three different nights, October 2, 3, and 4 from 5:30-8pm. Tickets are $25 for Garden Members and $35 for Non-members and reservations are required by September 21. Sign up online at www.japanesegarden.com/events/moonviewing or call (503) 542-0280. Moonviewing is sponsored by the The James F. & Marion L. Miller Foundation and The Collins Foundation.
