Portland Farmers Market Closing Thursday Ecotrust Market

November 23rd, 2009

healthy-organic-foodsPortland Farmers Market today announced its decision to permanently close the Thursday Ecotrust Market at 721 NW 9th Avenue located in the parking lot of the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center. While Portland Farmers Markets’ four other locations experienced increased traffic and sales over the years, the Thursday Ecotrust Market did not share the same rate of growth.

The market which first opened in 2003 through a partnership with non-profit Ecotrust had been open 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays from June to September.

“The Ecotrust Market was located in a vibrant, densely populated neighborhood, and yet it never seemed to reach its full potential,” said Ann Forsthoefel, executive director of Portland Farmers Market, a nonprofit 501(c)6 organization operated by a small staff of four full-time and four part-time employees and numerous volunteers. “We thank Ecotrust for their partnership, Food Front Coop for their sponsorship and, of course, the dedicated shoppers that supported our local farmers and food artisans every Thursday.”

Deborah Kane, vice president Ecotrust Food & Farms, said, “We have much respect and admiration for the Portland Farmers Market. While Ecotrust staff will no longer have the option of buying some of the region’s best products right outside our door, we’ll continue to support local agriculture through initiatives such as Edible Portland and FoodHub. And of course we’ll be among the first in line at all of the other Portland Farmers Market locations.”

THE MARKETS ARE UP

The closing of this location isn’t a reflection of the state of farmers’ markets nationally. As of October 2009, there were 5,274 farmers markets registered in the USDA Farmers Market Directory and over the last decade there has been a 170% increase in farmers’ markets opening nationwide.

The staff of Portland Farmers Market is currently evaluating other possible locations for a weekly market in Northwest Portland. The organization describes the ideal site as one that offers high visibility, community engagement and support from neighborhood and business associations.

The Thursday Ecotrust Market was sponsored by Food Front Cooperative Grocery. Portland Farmers Market is generously supported by community partners West Coast Bank and Mix.

Great Promotional Swag

November 5th, 2009

With my 2nd Portland Tweet Up coming up on November 10th (all the info is at http://www.pdxtweetup.com), it’s going to be an awesome night to get together and network with other Portland Tweeters.

IMO, one of the best and simplest ways to build and promote your brand is to get your name out on all the groovy swag you can….things that people use every single day: pens, mugs, calendars, magnets, etc, etc. Purchase bulk amounts and sell them or, the best way, hand them out. It will be a sure fire way to put your company in front of as many eyes as possible.

One of the premiere online companies that can help you produce promotional products is Amsterdam. Promotional printing and dozens of other swag products is their specialty and, if you can, get some stuff made up with the intent of handing it out at the Portland Tweet Up.

You really can’t have enough of this type of stuff! ;)

See you next Tuesday.

~~ Tony

Portland Pro Wrestling Battles Hunger

November 2nd, 2009

Portland WrestlingThis is a Portland Pro Wrestling event that I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to!

The 2 Portland promotions, DOA Pro Wrestling and NWWA Pro Wrestling are tag-teaming to beat Oregon hunger and win one for needy families all around the state. Beginning Saturday, November 21, they will be putting together a 73-hour wrestling specatular, featuring not only grapplers from both promotions, but stars from across the country coming in.  All of this to benefit the Oregon Food Bank!

In true Rose City spirit, both contending promotions set aside their differences for 3 days and work their tails off to put on a hell of a show for the fans in the northwest and give back in spades to the community. Who said wrestlers don’t have a soft spot?

$5 or 2 cans of food will get you in the door. That is one awesome event and something that you don’t want to miss!

This bash-fest goes straight through until Tueday evening, non-stop and I’ll be there to cover the whole bloody thing (pun intended)!

For all the information, head over to DOA Pro Wrestling web site.
